Planting

• Plant these bulbs in fall.
• These bulbs typically have a hole in the top center where last year’s stem grew. This looks odd but is perfectly normal.
• It is best to plant this bulb on its side – this prevents water collecting at the top of the bulb and causing it to rot.
• Plant in a sunny to semi-shaded area about 20 cm (8 in) deep and 25 to 30 cm (10 to 12 in) apart.
• Water thoroughly after planting.

Growing

• These bulbs do best in well-drained soil.
• Fritillaria do best when the bulbs are left undisturbed for long periods of time. For this reason, they are not recommended for containers.
• Water as needed during active growth periods.

Taking Care

• Fritillaria are deer and rodent resistant and will also keep rodents away from bulbs planted around.
• When in bloom, feel free to cut some flowers for bouquets. The flowers can be picked without damaging the plant.

Winterizing

• After flowering, the leaves should be allowed to die down. The leaves will gather sunlight and provide nourishment for next year’s show.
• These bulbs come back for several years.
