How to Grow Calla Lilies

Planting Calla Lilies

  • Plant in spring after the last frost.
  • If you cannot plant your bulbs and perennials right away, store them in a cool, dry, dark location, like a basement.
  • Plant them with the pointy end up in a sunny to semi-shaded area about 8 cm (3 in) deep and 40 to 45 cm (16 to 18 in) apart.
  • When planted in a container, 3 rhizomes are perfect for a 30 cm (12 in) pot.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.

Growing Calla Lilies

  • These bulbs will grow in any normal garden soil, but prefer moist well-drained soil and heavy feedings of organic matter.
  • These bulbs are easy to grow and look majestic in mass plantings or in containers.

Calla Lilies Care

  • Water as needed during active growth periods, but allow the soil to become dry between watering.
  • These flowers last a long time as cut flowers, making them popular for arrangements and bouquets.
  • These flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies.

Winterizing Calla Lilies

  • These bulbs are not winter hardy and need to be dug up after the first frost.
  • Do not wash but dry the bulbs for a day.
  • Store away from drafts at 5 °C to 10 °C (40 °F to 50 °F) in a paper bag or box filled with dry peat moss.

I opened the box and white stems were poking out. I waited til the frost was gone and put the plant outside. Roots were coming up up top too. I still have it and am hoping it will remember what it is supposed to look like as i love calla lilies. I tried to add a photo but it said i didn''t have permission.
