About Astilbe Arendsii Fanal

Astilbe Arendsii Fanal, winner of the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit, effortlessly brings vibrancy and dimension to shaded landscapes. Its lush, narrow, crimson red plumes, comprised of hundreds of densely packed tiny flowers, open in succession starting mid-summer.

The plumes emerge from mahogany red foliage that transition to dark green with red tones as summer unfolds. Even as the blossoms start to dry, they retain their deep, rich red colour extending the season for months, making them an excellent choice for cut flowers.

Astilbe are the ideal shade plants, coming back bigger and better every year while requiring minimal effort. Whether gracing perennial borders, woodland landscapes, waterside areas, or containers, these delicate feathery plumes elegantly dance in the breeze, while attracting a diverse array of pollinators.

How to Grow Astilbe

Planting Astilbe

  • Plant in spring after the last frost.
  • Keep plants cool until planting and be careful that they do not dry out.
  • Plant in the shade - morning sun is fine, butafternoon sun will be too hot.
  • Add compost or peat humus to enrich and loosen the soil, if needed.
  • Plant so that the crown and roots are completely covered and the tips of dormant eyes are just below the surface.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.

Growing Astilbe

  • Plants thrive in well-drained moist soils with plenty of humus.
  • Grow under shrubs or evergreen trees and protect from strong winds.
  • Once planted the addition of organic mulch will help retain moisture in the soil as well as keeping down the weeds.

Astilbe Care

  • Maintain a regular watering schedule. Keep the soil moist, but avoid over-watering.
  • When in bloom, feel free to cut some flowers for bouquets.
  • After flowering; fertilize them with a fertilizer high in nitrogen.

Winterizing Astilbe

  • Foliage should be cut back in the fall.
  • For new plants, provide a winter mulch of evergreen boughs or salt marsh hay after the ground freezes to help prevent heaving.
