About Colocasia Aloha (Elephant Ear)

Colocasia Aloha is a standout among Elephant Ear varieties, bringing a bold tropical vibe to any space. The large, heart-shaped leaves of rich olive green transition into a deep purple-black hue accentuated by bluish-green and light green veins. Atop vibrant green stems, these glossy leaves can reach an impressive two feet in length and a foot in width.

Part of the Hawaiian Series developed by Dr. John Cho, this cultivar combines the clumping form of Colocasia Esculenta with the leaf patterning of the Colocasia 'Illustris' group. The result? A plant with outstanding foliage quality and striking visual appeal.

Cultivated in Costa Rica, these Colocasia bulbs brim with self-contained energy, ensuring robust growth. Adaptable to various environments—beds, borders, or containers—this versatile plant thrives as a striking centerpiece or background foliage. For optimal indoor growth, choose a large container and position in indirect sunlight.

How to Grow Elephant Ears

Planting Elephant Ears

  • Plant in spring after the last frost.
  • If you cannot plant your bulbs and perennials right away, store them in a cool, dry, dark location, like a basement.
  • Plant in the garden when soil temperature reaches 10 °C (50 °F) or more.
  • Dig a hole in rich, organic soil about 3 to 4 times the size of the tuber and plant 5 cm (2 in) deep and 90 to 120 cm (36 to 48 in) apart.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.

Growing Elephant Ears

  • Elephant ears are beautiful as a groundcover, for borders, in containers on your deck and inside your home.
  • Mix several varieties for a colourful contrast. Take advantage of their large, attractive foliage and grow them amongst your other plants for added texture.

Elephant Ears Care

  • Maintain a regular watering schedule. Keep the soil moist, but avoid over-watering.
  • Keep them healthy by removing dead leaves and stems, and fertilize once a month.

Winterizing Elephant Ears

  • Hardy in zones 8 to 10, elsewhere lift or protect over-winter.
  • After first fall frost has blackened the foliage, or the foliage begins to wither, cut stems back to 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in).
  • Lift the bulbs: gently dig up bulb and allow to dry off.
  • Store in slightly moistened vermiculite or peat moss in a cool 5 °C to 10 °C (40 °F to 50 °F) location.

How large of a pot should be used for 1 bulb? And assume if I bought 3 bulbs should they each be in their own pot?

Here are some growing directions below, normally they can go right in the ground:

Planting

Timing: Plant Colocasia 'Aloha' in the spring after the danger of frost has passed. In warmer climates, you can plant them earlier.

Location: Choose a location that receives full to partial sunlight. Colocasia thrives in bright light but can tolerate some shade.

Soil: They prefer well-drained, rich, and moist soil. Amending your soil with organic matter can improve fertility and drainage.

Spacing: Space the tubers about 12 to 18 inches apart to allow ample room for growth.
