How to Grow Hyacinthus

Planting Hyacinthus

  • Plant these bulbs in fall.
  • These bulbs require a well-drained soil. If they must be planted in heavy soil, it would be a good idea to mix some sharp sand into the soil.
  • Plant them with the pointy end up in a sunny to semi-shaded area about 15 cm (6 in) deep and 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 in) apart.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.
  • Hyacinths bulbs can cause skin irritation, therefore wash your hands after planting.

Growing Hyacinthus

  • Close placement to the house allows you to enjoy the fragrant aroma from the bulbs inside the house as well as in the garden.
  • These bulbs are great for containers and can be used for indoor forcing.

Hyacinthus Care

  • These bulbs are deer resistant and work great in areas where deer or rodents are a problem.
  • Fertilize just before they start blooming.
  • Pick some flowers for a bouquet and enjoy the beautiful fragrance.
  • Remove the flowers when they are spent. Otherwise the plant will divert energy from building up the bulb, which is necessary for next year’s display."

Winterizing Hyacinthus

  • After flowering, the leaves should be allowed to die down. The leaves will gather sunlight and provide nourishment for next year’s show.
  • These bulbs come back for several years.

In a 10-inch pot, how many bulbs can I plant of Hyacinthus? Is Canadian peat moss, topsoil & perlite great for Hyacinthus?

For a 10-inch pot, you can typically plant about 5 to 7 hyacinth bulbs, depending on their size and the spacing you prefer. Here’s a guideline for planting:
Planting Hyacinth Bulbs in a 10-Inch Pot:

Spacing:
Bulb Size: If the bulbs are larger, you might want to space them a bit further apart. For smaller bulbs, you can plant them closer together.
General Rule: Plant bulbs about 2-3 inches apart from each other. This allows them enough space to grow and develop without overcrowding.

Planting Depth:
Plant bulbs about 4-6 inches deep. This means that the top of the bulb should be about 4-6 inches below the soil surface.

Soil: Use well-drained potting mix. Hyacinths prefer a soil mix that retains some moisture but doesn’t become waterlogged.

Potting: Ensure the pot has good drainage holes to prevent excess water from sitting at the bottom, which can lead to bulb rot.

Arrangement: You can plant the bulbs in a single layer, or if you want a fuller look, you can plant a second layer of bulbs on top of the first, ensuring that each layer is separated by soil.
