About Leucojum Aestivum

Charmingly petite, Leucojum Aestivum, also known as 'Summer Snowflake', have bell-shaped, milky-white flowers with faint, green-tipped petals dangling from grass-like stems. With a fragrance reminiscent of delicate chocolate, these easy to grow plants are ideal for naturalizing, spreading beautifully to create a carpet of white in rock gardens, under deciduous trees, in shrub borders, as ground cover, woodland gardens and flower beds.

How to Grow Leucojum

Planting Leucojum

  • Plant these bulbs in fall.
  • If you cannot plant your bulbs right away store them in a cool, dry, dark location, like a basement.
  • Plant them with the pointy end up in a sunny to semi-shaded area about 10 cm (4 in) deep and 8 to 10 cm (3 to 4 in) apart.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.

Growing Leucojum

  • These bulbs do best in well-drained soil.
  • These bulbs do best when the bulbs are left undisturbed for long periods of time. For this reason they are not recommended for containers.
  • These bulbs look good planted in groups at the base of trees or in wooded areas.
  • Plant in groups of eight or more bulbs which then appear more natural.

Leucojum Care

  • These bulbs are deer resistant and work great in areas where deer or rodents are a problem.
  • When in bloom, feel free to cut flowers for lightly scented spring bouquets. This will not hurt the plants.
  • The bulbs can be given an all-purpose fertilizer after flowering and given occasional liquid feeds once the leaves dies down in fall.

Winterizing Leucojum

  • After flowering, the leaves should be allowed to die down. The leaves will gather sunlight and provide nourishment for next year’s show.
  • Your bulbs will rest for a few months before beginning the next growing cycle.
