About Music Garlic Bulb - Hardneck

Music Garlic, a porcelain hardneck variety originally from Italy and introduced to Canada by Al Music in the 1980s, boasts a mild flavor that elevates dishes without overpowering them. With 4-7 giant cloves, its white skins tinged with pink are a breeze to peel, adding a subtle garlic essence to your culinary creations. This garlic variety is a true Canadian favourite. It's not only the most widely planted variety but also one of the hardiest. With its cold tolerance and adaptability to various climates, it's a top pick for growers across the nation.

As it grows, it produces tender scapes that you can enjoy in your meals. Plus, those curly scapes make for a unique and beautiful vase decoration. And if you let them keep growing, you'll be treated to stunning pink flowers from late summer to early fall.

How to Grow Garlic

Planting Garlic

  • These bulbs can be grown in almost any soil as long as it is well-drained and fertile.
  • Break the garlic head into cloves before planting.
  • Plant them with the pointy end up about 5 cm (2 in) deep and 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 in) apart.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.

Growing Garlic

  • Weed regularly when plants start growing.
  • Water as needed during active growth periods, but allow the soil to become dry between watering.
  • All-purpose garden fertilizer applied at the beginning and middle of the growing season is effective.
  • Growing garlic is also a way to prevent insect infestations in the garden.

Garlic Care

  • Garlic bulbs are ready to be harvested when you can feel the individual cloves in the bulb, and the leaves turn yellow or brown.
  • To harvest, carefully lift the bulbs with a spade or a garden fork. Carefully brush off the soil and dry the plants for 2 to 3 weeks in a shaded area with good air circulation.
  • Once the garlic bulbs are dry, you can store them. Remove any dirt and trim off any roots or leaves.
  • Bulbs should be stored in a cool 5 °C (40 °F), dark and dry place.

Winterizing Garlic

  • During the winter months you should check your stored bulbs regularly and promptly use any that show signs of sprouting.
  • If you plan on planting garlic again next season, save some of your largest bulbs to plant again in the spring.
