About Organic Red Baron Onion

Award winning Organic Red Baron Onion is an extremely versatile red onion that maintains its vibrant burgundy colour at all stages of growth. Characterized by its medium to large size, this onion features a deep red skin and crisp, white texture that adds a delightful crunch to dishes. With a flavour that strikes a balance between sweet and mildly pungent, the Organic Red Baron Onion is a versatile ingredient that complements both raw and cooked preparations.

Red Baron stands out as a bolt-proof and dependable mid-to-late maturity onion, well-suited for high-density planting. A long-day variety, when sown in the summer, Red Baron offers the flexibility of being harvested as scallions in early fall. Optimal scallion harvest is achieved at 12-15 inches before bulbs start forming, typically around 65-70 days after planting. Alternatively, if left to mature, Red Baron develops round red bulbs with a robust flavour, surpassing many other red onions in intensity.

How to Grow Onions

Planting Onions

  • The onion belongs to the family of the garlic and shallot.
  • These bulbs can be grown in almost any soil as long as it is well-drained and fertile.
  • Plant them with the pointy end up about 3 cm (1 in) deep and 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 in) apart.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.

Growing Onions

  • Weed regularly when plants start growing.
  • Water as needed during active growth periods, but allow the soil to become dry between watering.
  • All-purpose garden fertilizer applied at the beginning and middle of the growing season is effective.
  • Attention! When flowers appear, cut them! Otherwise the plant will divert energy from building up the bulb.

Onions Care

  • When the leaves turn yellow and die, remove the bulbs from the ground.
  • To harvest, carefully lift the bulbs with a spade or a garden fork. Carefully brush off the soil and dry the plants for 2 to 3 weeks in a shaded area with good air circulation.
  • Once the bulbs are dry, you can store them. Remove any dirt and trim off any roots or leaves.

Winterizing Onions

  • Bulbs should be stored in a cool 5 °C (40 °F), dark and dry place.
  • During the winter months you should check your stored bulbs regularly and promptly use any that show signs of sprouting.
