About Picasso Calla Lily (Zantedeschia)

Calla Lilies (Zantedeschia) stand out as among the world's most sophisticated and exotic cut flowers, and the Picasso Calla Lily embodies this. Each bi-colour, creamy bloom opens to gradually reveal its purple heart, surrounding a prominent yellow stamen. The contrasting colour combination gives it a dramatic and artistic appearance, much like the works of the artist Picasso.

Relatively easy to grow, Picasso Calla Lily rises elegantly on slender stems that reach a height of 14-18 inches (35-45 cm) surrounded by green leaves speckled with white. Displaying their beauty for weeks, from the heart of summer to fall, Calla Lilies effortlessly enhance borders, mixed perennial beds, containers, or floral arrangements. A favourite amongst hummingbirds, butterflies and other pollinators, they consistently offer a spectacular show with their opulent and vibrant hues.

How to Grow Calla Lilies

Planting Calla Lilies

  • Plant in spring after the last frost.
  • If you cannot plant your bulbs and perennials right away, store them in a cool, dry, dark location, like a basement.
  • Plant them with the pointy end up in a sunny to semi-shaded area about 8 cm (3 in) deep and 40 to 45 cm (16 to 18 in) apart.
  • When planted in a container, 3 rhizomes are perfect for a 30 cm (12 in) pot.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.

Growing Calla Lilies

  • These bulbs will grow in any normal garden soil, but prefer moist well-drained soil and heavy feedings of organic matter.
  • These bulbs are easy to grow and look majestic in mass plantings or in containers.

Calla Lilies Care

  • Water as needed during active growth periods, but allow the soil to become dry between watering.
  • These flowers last a long time as cut flowers, making them popular for arrangements and bouquets.
  • These flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies.

Winterizing Calla Lilies

  • These bulbs are not winter hardy and need to be dug up after the first frost.
  • Do not wash but dry the bulbs for a day.
  • Store away from drafts at 5 °C to 10 °C (40 °F to 50 °F) in a paper bag or box filled with dry peat moss.
