About Alocasia Hilo Beauty (Upright Elephant Ear)

Alocasia Hilo Beauty (Elephant Ears) is a true work of tropical art. Its expansive, deep green leaves feature captivating splashes of light green and yellow in a camouflage-esque design. Standing at about one foot in length and 10 inches (25 cm) in width, these majestic leaves rise on striking blue-black stems, their contrast becoming more pronounced as the plant matures, adding to the allure of this botanical artwork.

These Alocasia bulbs are cultivated in Costa Rica and are busting with self-contained energy to ensure their robust growth. This versatile plant thrives in various settings, be it planted in beds, borders, or containers, serving as background foliage or an eye-catching centerpiece.

When growing Alocasia indoors, selecting a suitably large container and placing it in indirect sunlight is essential for optimal growth.

How to Grow Elephant Ears

Planting Elephant Ears

  • Plant in spring after the last frost.
  • If you cannot plant your bulbs and perennials right away, store them in a cool, dry, dark location, like a basement.
  • Plant in the garden when soil temperature reaches 10 °C (50 °F) or more.
  • Dig a hole in rich, organic soil about 3 to 4 times the size of the tuber and plant 5 cm (2 in) deep and 90 to 120 cm (36 to 48 in) apart.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.

Growing Elephant Ears

  • Elephant ears are beautiful as a groundcover, for borders, in containers on your deck and inside your home.
  • Mix several varieties for a colourful contrast. Take advantage of their large, attractive foliage and grow them amongst your other plants for added texture.

Elephant Ears Care

  • Maintain a regular watering schedule. Keep the soil moist, but avoid over-watering.
  • Keep them healthy by removing dead leaves and stems, and fertilize once a month.

Winterizing Elephant Ears

  • Hardy in zones 8 to 10, elsewhere lift or protect over-winter.
  • After first fall frost has blackened the foliage, or the foliage begins to wither, cut stems back to 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in).
  • Lift the bulbs: gently dig up bulb and allow to dry off.
  • Store in slightly moistened vermiculite or peat moss in a cool 5 °C to 10 °C (40 °F to 50 °F) location.
