Planting
Hymenocallis
Plant in spring after the last frost.
If you cannot plant your bulbs and perennials right away, store them in a cool, dry, dark location, like a basement.
These bulbs need full sun and they do best in well drained soil.
Plant in the garden when soil temperature reaches 10 °C (50 °F) or more.
Plant them with the pointy end up about 8 cm (3 in) deep and 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 in) apart.
Water thoroughly after planting.
Growing
Hymenocallis
Great when planted in containers.
Water as needed during active growth periods, but allow the soil to become dry between watering.
All-purpose garden fertilizer applied at the beginning and middle of the growing season is effective.
Care
Hymenocallis
Flowers are pleasantly fragrant, so plant them where their fragrance can be appreciated.
Hymenocallis make excellent cut flowers with their unique shape.
Winterizing
Hymenocallis
After flowering, the leaves should be allowed to die down. The leaves will gather sunlight and provide nourishment for next year’s show.
Hardy in zones 8 to 10, elsewhere lift or protect over-winter.
Do not wash but dry the bulbs for a day.
Store away from drafts at 10 °C to 16 °C (50 °F to 60 °F) in a paper bag or box filled with dry peat moss.
